A four day weekend turned into a full week event. Last Monday the forecast was flat. 6 attendees quickly turned to 3. Accommodation refunded… both Nisan + Hannah decided to change their approach to packing and headed out to Bilbao anyway.
After consulting with San Sebastián veteran Brian. An apartment was found for 3 overlooking Zuriola Beach. The trip begun with one night in Bilbao and ideas for how to spend a weekend with no waves begun to circle over 2 euro glasses of Txakoli.
Friday morning rolls around… A day to explore Bilbao… but an urgent call from Brian with words to the effect of “where the fuck are you guys” as the waves began to make an appearance.

We scrapped the city tour and got the next train to San Sebastian. Just in time to enjoy a sunset session with Brian leading the charge on some very blue foamies.
With a new found sense of optimism boards were rented for 24 hours and we managed to surf throughout the weekend. Nisan the most tenacious surfing 5 times across the 4 days with several different size boards. Brian particularly enjoyed his 6’6 soft top and Hannah put in an impressive session despite being 5 cervezas deep. And I spent far too much money on clothes in the rental shops! Sunday a mixed report. Nisan & I watched the water with intent and managed to get a couple hours in the late afternoon. Whilst Hannah + Brian ventured through some basque towns to make sure that the Gilda’s & Txatoli sales were spread evenly across the region.

Sunday night ended with Brian proving the phrase “a bad work man always blames his tools” with a Michelin level meal on a sub par hob that kept turning off and a pan too small for the cuts of beef and tuna steak. An incredible meal enjoyed by all rounded off a wonderful trip to San Sebastian in an air BB with no natural light and a very sandy floor.

San Sebastian if this was you flat I can’t wait to return when the forecast is firing. Until next time.
Jake
